LAFC at home against a struggling Sporting KC side. On paper this is a mismatch. LAFC are second in the West. Sporting KC are second from bottom. But that's why they play the games — nobody's ever won one on paper.
Steve Cherundolo has LAFC playing the best football in the conference. High press. Quick transitions. Overlapping fullbacks. It's not complicated — it's just fast and aggressive and most teams can't handle the intensity for 90 minutes. BMO Stadium has become a fortress again. Seven wins in nine home matches this season.
Sporting KC are a mess. Peter Vermes is in his 18th season and this might be the worst squad he's had. Injuries. Aging legs. No consistent goal scorer. They've won twice on the road all season — once in Houston, once in Colorado. Neither of those teams is LAFC. The midfield gets overrun too easily. The defense makes individual errors every week. Coming to BMO and getting a result requires something close to a miracle.
But LAFC have a bad habit of playing down to their competition. They lost at home to San Jose earlier this season. Drew with Minnesota when they should've won by three. If Sporting KC can keep it 0-0 for an hour, the nerves might kick in. Big if.

L L D L W — The win over Colorado was a pleasant surprise. Russell scored a brace. Before that: three losses and a draw. Conceded 11 goals in those four matches. The defense is hemorrhaging chances. Against LAFC's attack, that's a death sentence.

The 3-1 scoreline is basically this fixture's calling card. It's happened three times. LAFC dominate possession, create a ton of chances, and Sporting KC grab a consolation goal to make it look slightly more respectable. The 0-0 in 2024 was an anomaly — both teams hit the woodwork and neither could finish. Don't expect a repeat.
Dénis Bouanga (LAFC) — 13 goals this season. MLS MVP frontrunner. He's unplayable when he's confident — cuts inside from the left, shoots from anywhere, and his work rate off the ball sets the tone for the whole team. Sporting KC's right back is going to have a very long night.
Mateusz Bogusz (LAFC) — Quietly having a career year. 9 goals and 8 assists from midfield. His movement between the lines creates space for Bouanga and the overlapping fullbacks. If Sporting KC drop too deep, Bogusz will punish them from distance.
Johnny Russell (Sporting KC) — 34 years old, still the guy. 7 goals this season. Not as quick as he used to be but his left foot is still dangerous and he's SKC's only reliable source of goals. LAFC will double-team him. He'll still get a shot off.
Remi Walter (Sporting KC) — Defensive midfielder with a thankless job. His task: break up LAFC's rhythm in midfield. Foul when necessary. Slow the game down. Walter's good at the dark arts — he'll take a yellow card if it stops a counter. LAFC fans will hate him by halftime.
LAFC's 4-3-3 is all about width. The fullbacks push high, the wingers cut inside, and the midfield three control the tempo. Bouanga and Olivera on the wings are the primary threats. Sporting KC's fullbacks will spend most of the night pinned back. If they step out, LAFC play through the space behind. If they sit deep, LAFC cross from wide. Pick your poison.
Sporting KC will set up in a 4-2-3-1, try to stay compact, and hope to hit on the counter through Russell and Sallói. The problem: their transition defense is terrible. When they lose the ball, they don't recover shape quickly enough. LAFC's press will feast on that. Vermes might go with a back five to clog the box. It's desperate. It might be the only way.
Kayden Pierre is SKC's right back. He's 23, athletic, but raw. Bouanga is the best winger in the league. If Pierre gets isolated — and he will — Bouanga will either beat him 1v1 or force a foul in a dangerous area. Either outcome is bad for SKC.
Ilie spent five years at Sporting KC. Now he's LAFC's holding midfielder. Knows exactly how SKC like to build attacks. His positioning and reading of the game could shut down SKC's midfield before they even get started.
